Carter Plant Hire recently lifted an innovative hydrogen powered boat into Exmouth Marina.
The Exeter Port Authority took delivery of a new hydrogen electric boat, which will be based on the Exe estuary for a limited period of time to assist with trials and testing of the vessel. The boat was lifted into Exmouth Marina by Carter Plant Hire, ready for its final stages of fitting out. With fewer than 50 hydrogen vessels globally this represents a step towards a carbon free future for boats.
The Port Authority will not need to install expensive equipment to cater for hydrogen refuelling. Bottles are carried on the boat and they weigh about the same as a standard barbeque bottle. Batteries can be charged directly from the pontoon as well, so it makes the move to clean energy really straightforward.
Exeter University’s Centre for Clean Future Mobility will be gathering data from the vessel as she enters an extended period of trials over the next few months. The aim is to show communities around the Exe how easy it is to transition to a clean, safe boat propulsion system without compromising on range. By the time the trial is complete she should be able to cope with the level of work done by combustion powered boats.
